On February 3, 2014, a contractor for the City of Davis, will begin replacement and expansion of the playground in Central Park. The project is anticipated to be completed by May, weather permitting. During this time, the playground will not be available for use.
The existing play structure is in need of replacement due to age and safety standard issues. The new structure will be a similarly sized structure and include a tall tower and slide, interactive play opportunities, climbing apparatus, balance features, ramps and rubberized surfacing material. The overall theme of the new play area will be agricultural, as a complement to the Davis Farmers Market activities, in Central Park.
The existing playground area will be doubled in size with an expansion to the north. The expanded play area will include a universally accessible playground. The playground area and play pieces are designed to accommodate users of all physical abilities. Some play pieces accommodate wheel chairs allowing the user to experience the sensation of rocking and swaying in a recreational environment. Other components of the play area include sensory play panels for touch and sound, mock farmers market stand, roller table allowing play movement using arms and upper body, an old fashion water pump and water channel leading to a sand play area. The area also includes a shady retreat area slightly removed from the more active play area. The entire play area will be fenced with tables and benches.
The new playground will be Davis’ first universally accessible play area. The play area is designed to be a complement to the new restroom in the park providing clear sight lines. During the construction process, the existing playground will not be available. We encourage families to take the opportunity to visit many of the other playgrounds located in Davis parks and greenbelts. Many of the playgrounds include unique play pieces that cannot be found elsewhere in Davis.
